Origin and History 

Herbal teas, originating in China around 4,000 years ago, are infusions of herbs, spices, or plant materials steeped in hot water.  

Historically valued for their phytochemical content, they offer health benefits such as aiding digestion, boosting immune function, and reducing inflammation. 

Herbal teas are often referred to as “Tisanes” meaning these teas are not true teas which are not processed from Camellia Sinensis plant

China is well known for its diverse tea cultures including herbal tea and is the largest producer of herbal tea. 

In 2023, India's export of herbal tea was valued at approximately ₹5,877.77 crores, reflecting the growing demand in the international market. 

The total import value of herbal teas from 2023 to 2024 was $45.95 million (around ₹3,830 crores) with a volume of 24.52 million kg 

India exported 3,544 shipments of herbal tea from March 2023 to February 2024. The major shipments are to the countries United States and United Kingdom. 

Compared to overall tea export volume, the export of herbal tea represents a minor portion in India. 

From March 2023 to February 2024, India’s import of herbal tea were 42 shipments which came from 23 foreign exporters.
